The short answer
Usually by phone, rarely in person. 202 of the 391 California personal injury law offices in our directory (52%) say on their own website that they take calls 24/7. But of the 193 offices that post opening hours on Google, only 37 (19%) list any Saturday hours and 25 (13%) list Sunday hours.
So if you're hurt in a crash on a Friday night, you can very likely reach someone who'll take down the details. Sitting down with a lawyer in an open office before Monday is a different matter. We checked every figure here on November 5, 2026, using each firm's own website, its Google Business Profile and the State Bar of California's public attorney search, across 72 cities in seven metro areas.
"24/7" mostly means the phone line
Saying "24/7" and keeping the office open on weekends turn out to be two different things. Of the 202 offices that say they take calls around the clock, 68 also post hours on Google. Of those 68, 25 list Saturday hours and 19 list Sunday hours. Most of the rest post a normal weekday schedule.
Offices that don't claim 24/7 are even less likely to open on weekends: of the 125 that post hours, 12 (10%) open on Saturday.
Weekday hours are just as uniform. Of the offices posting weekday hours, 131 close at 5:00 p.m. on their latest weekday, 18 at 6:00 p.m., and just 6 stay open past 7:00 p.m., not counting the 15 whose hours run to midnight.
What that means for you: if you call after hours, expect an answering service, an intake specialist or an on-call staff member, not necessarily an attorney. Ask who'll call you back and when.
Spanish, free consultations and fees
Beyond availability, here's what the 391 offices publish before you ever call:
- Free consultation: 359 offices (92%) say the first consultation or case review is free.
- Fee terms in writing on the site: 266 offices (68%) state their fee arrangement, usually as "no fee unless we win" or similar contingency fee wording. 258 offices (66%) state both a free consultation and their fee terms.
- Spanish: 126 offices (32%) say they serve clients in Spanish. A Spanish-language page counts; a website translation widget doesn't.
- State Bar license: the lead attorney at all 391 offices shows as "Active" on the State Bar profile. The median lead attorney was admitted 19 years ago, and 47 offices (12%) are led by an attorney admitted less than 10 years ago.
A free consultation and "no fee unless we win" don't tell you the percentage. California requires a contingency fee agreement to be in writing (Business and Professions Code §6147), so ask to read the agreement before you sign. It should say the fee percentage and how case costs are handled.
How it varies by metro
| Metro | Offices | Say 24/7 | Spanish | Open Saturday (of those posting hours) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Los Angeles | 129 | 70 (54%) | 47 (36%) | 19 of 63 (30%) |
| Orange County | 57 | 33 (58%) | 20 (35%) | 4 of 28 (14%) |
| San Diego | 44 | 29 (66%) | 7 (16%) | 5 of 17 (29%) |
| San Francisco Bay Area | 68 | 30 (44%) | 21 (31%) | 5 of 36 (14%) |
| Sacramento | 35 | 9 (26%) | 7 (20%) | 0 of 20 (0%) |
| Inland Empire | 45 | 24 (53%) | 18 (40%) | 3 of 22 (14%) |
| Fresno | 13 | 7 (54%) | 6 (46%) | 1 of 7 (14%) |
A few things stand out:
- Los Angeles has the most weekend options. Nearly a third of LA offices posting hours list Saturday hours, and 8 of the 37 Saturday-open offices statewide are in the city of Los Angeles itself. Browse them on the Los Angeles page.
- Sacramento is a weekday market. None of the 20 Sacramento-area offices posting hours list Saturday hours, and only 9 of 35 (26%) say they take calls 24/7, the lowest share of any metro. See the Sacramento page.
- Spanish varies. About 4 in 10 offices in the Inland Empire and Fresno say they serve clients in Spanish, against 16% in San Diego. Fresno's sample is small (13 offices), so treat its share with care.
Before you call
- Write down what happened while you remember it: date, time, place, the other party's insurance details, photos, and the names of any witnesses. That's useful whoever you end up calling.
- If you call outside office hours, ask whether you're speaking to an attorney or intake staff, and when an attorney will review your case.
- Check the license yourself. Every listing links to the lead attorney's State Bar profile. Our guide on how to check a lawyer in California shows what to look for, including public discipline records.
- Ask for the fee agreement in writing before you sign anything, and compare the percentage and costs with at least one other firm.

How we counted
We counted the 391 personal injury law offices listed on California Injury Guide on November 5, 2026 (72 cities, seven metros). "Say 24/7", "free consultation", "fee terms" and "Spanish" count only explicit statements on the firm's own website. Opening hours come from each office's Google Business Profile; 193 offices post them, and "open Saturday" means any Saturday hours are listed. License status and admission year come from the lead attorney's profile on the State Bar of California's attorney search. Hours change, so call ahead to confirm.
